The Metric Foot Band are an Essex-based ceilidh band who have been playing together for many years. Their instrumentation
includes vocals, English concertina, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, harmonica, bass, drums and percussion. They are very experienced
at playing for a wide variety of functions. These include parties, anniversaries, birthdays, weddings, clubs, groups, twinning
associations and village celebrations. A typical evening would feature music and songs from many different traditional
sources, along with some original material. They have an excellent reputation and are renowned for their versatility
and musicality, as the 'thank you letters' page will testify. Although they usually play for ceilidhs (or barn dances etc.) in Essex, they often travel to Suffolk,
Hertfordshire, Kent, Cambridge and London. They have also played in Belgium and Germany as well as at many major Folk
Festivals in the UK.
The Metric Foot Band never work from a pre-written set list. Instead the Band's caller Sarah, who has a remarkable skill
for reading the audience's dancing ability, tailors the dances to suit. Although officially the caller, her role is much more
of a dance instructor. She likes the hands-on approach and can usually be found amongst the audience demonstrating the figures
and steps. Her repertiore of traditional and original dances is extensive and can include circles, squares, longways
sets, couple dances and line dancing.
The Band also has an extensive repertoire, which includes songs. They are skilful at providing music that perfectly matches
the dance. From the 'first time' novices right through to experienced dance club members, Sarah and the band will encourage
you to have a great time
Metric Foot recordings include, 'Taped Measures', 'Foot Rules', 'A Good Kicking', 'Devotion
to Motion', and 'Down There For Dancing'.
